Diesels and larger petrol engines are the first to sulk on a frosty morning. The NOCO Boost XL GB50 is meant for exactly that household car that needs a little more push than a compact.

Its 1500A peak gets 12V lead-acid batteries going on petrol engines up to 7.0 L and diesels up to 4.5 L, and a full charge stretches to as many as 30 starts. Connect it without fear of sparks or a polarity mix-up; it reads batteries from 2V and has manual override for anything flatter.

In between rescues, the 35 Wh cell charges phones and tablets via USB, and the 200-lumen torch (7 modes) lights up the engine bay after dark.

How to use it, step by step

• 1.  Make sure the ignition is off and the key removed.
• 2.  Attach red to positive (+) and black to negative (-) or to an unpainted metal earth point.
• 3.  Power up the GB50; manual override is there if a very flat battery isn't detected.
• 4.  Turn the key, and once the engine is running unclip black first, then red.
• 5.  Give the GB50 a full recharge (around 4.5 h on a 2A USB charger) before putting it away.
