The supermarket car park, the lights left on, and a car that just clicks. Rather than hunting for someone with cables, you open the glovebox and reach for the NOCO Boost Plus GB40.

With 1000A peak it handles petrol engines up to 6.0 L and diesels up to 3.0 L running on 12V lead-acid batteries, and one charge lasts for up to 20 starts. UltraSafe keeps the clamps spark-free and shrugs off reversed polarity; a battery down at 2V is still picked up, and below that there's manual override.

Its 24 Wh battery also charges your phone or tablet over USB, and there's a 100-lumen torch for working under the bonnet in the dark.

How to use it, step by step

• 1.  With the key out of the ignition, open the bonnet and find the battery.
• 2.  Red clamp to the + terminal, black clamp to the - terminal or to a solid metal part of the engine block.
• 3.  Switch the GB40 on; for a battery so flat it isn't recognised, there's manual override.
• 4.  Start the car and remove the clamps in reverse order: black, then red.
• 5.  Plug the GB40 into a USB charger afterwards to refill it.
