It's a cold morning, you turn the key and the dashboard barely flickers. No second car, no leads: this is exactly when you'll be glad the NOCO Boost Sport GB20 lives in your glovebox.

It sends 500A peak into any 12V lead-acid battery (AGM, EFB, gel, MF or flooded) under the bonnet of a petrol car of up to 4.0 L, and a full charge is good for up to 20 starts. The clamps won't spark and don't mind being connected the wrong way round, and if your battery has sunk below 2V you can still get going with manual override.

The rest of the time, its 24 Wh cell tops up your phone over USB and the 100-lumen torch has 7 modes, SOS included.

How to use it, step by step

• 1.  Switch the ignition off before you start.
• 2.  Clip the red clamp onto the positive (+) terminal and the black one onto the negative (-) terminal or a bare metal earth point.
• 3.  Turn the GB20 on. If a battery under 2V isn't detected, use manual override.
• 4.  Start the engine, then take off the black clamp first and the red one last.
• 5.  Back home, recharge the GB20 over USB so it's ready for next time.
